BARNESVILLE, Ohio (WTOV) — The 57th Barnesville Pumpkin Festival kicked off in Ohio Wednesday night with the annual pumpkin weigh-in.

Jeff Theil, of Dillonvale, set a new state record with his King Pumpkin tipping the scales at 2,195 pounds.

He attributes his win to a bit of help from a friend.

“I got the seed from a guy that ended up passing away from cancer,” Theil said. “I emailed his wife when (the pumpkin) was 50 days old and I let her know how things were going and I told her I can’t help think that he’s up there pushing things along.”

The festival hits its full stride Thursday, with the opening ceremonies and ribbon cutting taking place at 5 p.m.
