Weekend Box Office for August 18-29, 2017

(KUTV) It’s was supposed to be a photo finish between “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” and last week's champion, "Annabelle: Creation." That wasn't the case as "The Hitman's Bodyguard" easily takes the weekend crown with $21.6 million. The action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson was expected to top out at $15 million.

“Annabelle: Creation” matched expectations with a solid $15.5 million. That’s only 55 percent drop from last week. An incredibly strong hold for a horror film., particularly when you consider the film had a strong week leading into Friday. It's worldwide total that currently sits at $117.6 million. Not too shabby for a film that cost only $15 million to make.

In third is “Logan Lucky” with an underwhelming $8 million. Clearly director Steven Soderbergh’s return to cinema with solid reviews and a star-studded cast that includes Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig and Riley Keough wasn’t enough incentive to pull audiences into the theaters.

Fourth place goes to “Dunkirk” with $6.7 million. Christopher Nolan’s WWII drama is now approaching $400 million worldwide.

Fifth place on this lazy weekend goes to “The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” with $5 million. That’s only a 38 percent drop from opening weekend, but there wasn’t far to fall considering it opened with only $8 million last weekend. The film has now earned $17.6 million against a $40 million budget.
