It's a slow week for releases as our attentions turn towards... well, typically travel and large family gatherings. Maybe we should all just lay low this year. Reset, come back in two weeks.

  • Akira 4K - Released in Japan in 1988, Katsuhiro Otomo's cyber-punk epic tells the story of a future built on the ashes of World War III. It is a time underscored by extreme wealth and widespread poverty. Violence is frequent as rival factions fight it out in the streets. When Tetsuo, a member of a motorcycle gang, is captured and subjected to a series of test by a secret government program he slowly transforms into a creature with psycho-kinetic powers who escapes and leaves a trail of carnage in his wake. A new 4K transfer of the film played theatrically in 2020 and is now available on 4K Blu-ray.
  • The Craft: Legacy - The is a sequel to 1996's "The Craft" sees three teens befriend the new girl in school believing that she'll be the perfect candidate to complete their witch coven. The original was dark, but never serious. "Legacy" is all over the map. It feels like two films, a dark and campy melodrama and a serious teenage coming-of-age drama. Had the film been one or the other it probably would have worked. There's a bit of nostalgia for those who enjoyed the 1996 film, but not nearly enough. At least the cast is fairly strong and I'm not about to give up on writer/director Zoe Lister-Jones. (Full Review)
  • Kajillionaire - The latest effort from indie director Miranda July. Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood) is a young woman with very little life experience. Sheltered by her parents (Debra Winger, Richard Jenkins), a pair of small-time criminals and scam artists, her perception of family relationships is more of a business agreement than it is about love. • The War with Grandpa - When his grandfather (Robert De Niro) moves in with his family, Peter (Oakes Fegley) is forced to give up his room and move into the attic. Peter refuses to surrender his room without a fight and enlists his friends to help him force grandpa out. Grandpa isn't going down without a fight.
  • Jiu Jitsu - Alain Moussi, Frank Grillo, JuJu Chan, Tony Jaa and Nicolas Cage star in this sci-fi martial arts film that sees a legendary order of Jiu Jitsu masters asked to save the world from an invading alien force. Unfortunately, their order's leader is suffering from amnesia.

  • Yellow Rose - Eva Noblezada stars as Rose, an undocumented Filipina teen living in a small Texas town, who dreams of being a country music star. When her mother is taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Rose flees to Austin where she'll have to learn to survive and chase her dreams all on her own.
